Overseeding Lawn for a Very Dense and Thick Yard

Looking for a very dense and thick land? You should consider overseeding the lawn!

Even tough you have a beautiful green yard, overseeding will help improve the quality of your lawn. It should be part of your regular maintenance routine.

A lot of factors can make your grass look worn and thin like for example pets, kids, weather. You should consider overseeding to help you reinvigorate your lawn. Overseeding is important for a thick, healthy, and weed free lawn. Weeds won’t have room to grow if your lawn is dense.

When to do it?

Spring and fall give you the best conditions since they are cooler temperature and it will be easier to keep your ground moist You can still do it during Summer but be sure to keep your ground humid.

Preparing your Lawn to Overseed

To prepare your lawn before adding seeds to your ground, you will want to mow your lawn and bad the clipping. It will be important to give space to the seeds to be in contact with the soil to prepare the germination step.

Choosing your Seeds

You will want to evaluate what kind of seeds you want to grow since there is all sort of seeds on the market. We suggest you be picky with your choice of seeds since some of them are versatile mixes and others are specific for shaded areas, high traffic or quite simply different kinds of grass. There are also special recipes for overseeding that contains starter lawn food.

How much Seeds do you Need?

To know the exact quantity you will have to apply, please follow bag instructions and spread your seeds on desired area.

Usually, you should use 3 to 8 pounds by 1000 square feet depending if you are overseeding a healthy or damaged lawn and what kind of seeds you use.

If you have an heavily damaged lawn, you might want to consider going higher than that such as 8 to 12 pounds by 1000 square feet.

Watering your Seeds

You have to keep in mind that your seeds needs to be moist in all time to germinate. If they go dry, the tiny roots will dry up and you will loose all the work you did. It is preferable to sprinkle lightly a few times a day to just keep the soil moist.

When the roots are more mature, you will be able to water more deeply and cut frequencies. Try to follow these instructions since you don’t want to dry the seeds and you don’t want to overwater them since it could cause the seeds to rot.

Mowing the Lawn Again

Avoid mowing your lawn in that section for a few days or until your new seeds have come to a minimum height since you want to be sure the roots are strong enough to support a cutting.

Starter Fertilizer

If you want to give a little kick to your project, you might want to add a starter fertilizer. It will give a little bonus to your seeds when applied before or just after seeding.

Don’t forget to be picky on what kind of seeds you choose and have fun watching it grow!
